Christoph Keller on A Meaningful Life
What are these very short texts? people will ask me. Thankfully, they’re too long to be tweets and too unruly to feel at home on Facebook. They started as deleted scenes from otherwise unabandoned texts. Not anymore, with exceptions. Manganelli, the Italian master of short prose, called his very short texts “novels in pill form.” I wish mine were but they're not. You can’t swallow novels. Are mine mugwumps? I used to call my photographs “mugwumps,” when I still knew what that means. Mugwumps are faster than you think, the German poet Günter Eich said, but he said it about his very short texts, which he called “moles.” “Maulwürfe” in German sounds almost like “mugwumps” in English. But I'm slow, and I avoid thinking at all costs. My texts are what they are, mostly very short and even shorter. Some you actually can tweet; others make sense on Facebook. Why do you need a drawer for everything? That’s not where my texts live. Mine couldn’t do what they want. Some bite you in the ass with their surprisingly sharp teeth, others escape through the drain, even when the drain is clogged. Eat them subconsciously, but never digest them.
